Chinese physicians believe the body has Qi (pronounced chee, a life energy, a driving force and general guiding principal) which flows thorough the continuous channels called meridians. They believe that most medical problems result when the flow of Qi becomes blocked or disturbed. One of the ways to rectify this problem is to stimulate certain points along these meridians with needles, heat, or pressure to re-establish the normal flow of Qi. When the harmony is restored, the illness will be healed. Modern research in the West has begun to validate the effectiveness of acupuncture.
