There is usually something specific about your mate's behavior that has made you suspicious. They are secretive with the cell phones or pagers, unknown phone numbers are surfacing, or you detect obvious changes in their mood. You confront them only to get a long list of excuses and explanations. They become defensive and turn things around and would have you believe that you're paranoid.
