The driving force in the establishment of Builders FirstSource is the desire to supply professional class building materials and services to the country's homebuilders on a national basis. During the 1990's, the building materials industry experienced significant changes. Homebuilders started to grow via acquisition, creating huge national competitors. Similar consolidation took place with building materials manufacturers. It was only a matter of time before the building material provide industry - those firms between the consolidating manufacturers and consolidating homebuilders.
