If you are scheduled for surgery you may be asked to obtain a medical clearance from your Primary Care Provider (PCP). You will be advised of any pre-operative medication changes such as when you discontinue taking any type of blood thinning medication, including Aspirin. Most eye surgeries are done on an outpatient basis at either Baptist Eye Center, Springhill Surgery Center or Fair Park Surgery Center and the patient needs to arrive at the surgical facility approximately 1 hours before the procedure is scheduled to begin.

The human eye functions much like a camera. It has a front clear windshield (the cornea), an aperture to allow the appropriate amount of light in (the pupil or iris, colored part of the eye), a lens for focusing the light, and the retina for capturing the image (film).

read moreThis is a degeneration of the central retina. The macula is the portion of the retina responsible for central/fine detail vision. Our understanding of the cause(s) of macular degeneration is incomplete. Some authors suggest excessive ultraviolet light exposure may be involved and recommend use of sunglasses from an early age to decrease this exposure. Macular degeneration is usually described as either dry or wet. Dry is the more common form. This form is characterized by pigmentary changes, drusen and atrophy of the macula.
