Library in Oakland, CA
Library in Oakland, CA Karl Niebyl was a professor of economics who escaped from Nazi Germany and taught for the rest of his life in various North American universities. His last post was at San Jose State. Professor Niebyl died on April fourth, 1985, leaving his library to be made available to the public. He wanted this library to be named after his wife, Elizabeth Hale Niebyl, who was a leading figure in public housing in the days of the New Deal. The Niebyl collection was stored for two years, until we found a home for it in Berkeley's historic Finnish Hall.

Earthlight Magazine
read moreTo live, communicate, and celebrate a story that vitalizes our sacred relationship with the living Earth. The EarthLight community is engaged in the creative process of trying to express our guiding principles more clearly, completely and inspiringly. Eco-philosopher, teacher, writer, mother, and friend-of-all-life, Joanna Macy, has generously consented to share free of charge with all who may be interested, the heart of her current teaching and training work. More about Joanna Macy. The most remarkable feature of this historical moment on Earth is not that we are on the way to destroying the world -- we've actually been on the way for quite a while.
About Us
read moreSince it bagan publication, EarthLight has featured an EarthSaint at the centerfold of many of its editions. They come from all walks of life. What they share, rooted in a deep spirituality, is their passion for the earth and its care. The people we have honored as EarthSaints, past and present, have been willing to take risks to achieve their goals, including putting their lives on the line. This is perhaps best reflected in the lives of present day EarthSaints such as Annie Dillard [ EarthSaint in our Winter 1996-7 issue ] and the winners of the Goldman Environmental Prize for 1996.
