On February 9, 1983, the Georgetown University Student Federal Credit Union (then GUSFCU) was formally chartered by the National Credit Union Administration. At the time, it was hailed as a model for future student credit unions. The GUSFCU's founders received permission from the university administration to open on the 2nd floor of the O'Gara building. Georgetown University became the 1st private university to have an independent, student-run credit union.

Similarly, anytime you write a check, the money will come out of your checking account. A savings account earns interest, meaning that while money is in your savings account, it grows over time. Both are insured by the U.S. government for balances up to $250,000 through the NCUA. To encourage savings, the government limits withdrawals from savings accounts to six per month.
