Established in 1978, HFS is one of the nation's oldest organizations committed to fighting hunger and improving nutrition on the grassroots level. We administer a array of programs, including a parents committee advocating for healthier school meals, a 24-acre nonprofit farm that grows food for local families and social service agencies, three urban agriculture sites on a formerly abandoned lots, ann inner-city grocery retail project, and extensive outreach and advocacy in the Hartford community.

Our goal for our work is a healthy, culturally responsive, and just community food system that meets the needs of all residents. We advance this goal through programs that improve healthy food access while we advocate for a robust and economically sound food system and responsible food policies. Hartford Food System engages in a system-based approach that focuses on the root causes of food system issues- we recognize the importance of emergency food activities, but believe that long term answers will be found in non-emergency and sustainable approaches.
