Chattanooga's Institute for Acupuncture
read moreThe Institute for Acupuncture & Wellness is a holistic medical clinic located in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Bret is the first licensed acupuncturist in the area to be granted hospital privileges with Chattanooga's premier hospital, Erlanger Medical Center. The Institute for Acupuncture & Wellness, also known as IAW, is located in Norspring Cryotherapy & Rejuvenation Center located in Chattanooga's Southside District near Finley Stadium. Our goal is to help you achieve optimum health and wellness. Having evolved over thousands of years, acupuncture is one of the oldest continually practiced medical modalities in the world.
What to Expect
read moreMany first-time patients are concerned that acupuncture needles will feel like hypodermic injections at the doctor's office. They won't. Acupuncture uses hair-thin, flexible needles that you will hardly feel when I insert them. When I gently stimulate the needles they may produce a unique sensation that Oriental medicine calls de qi. Patients often describe de qi as a heavy, achy pressure, or spreading, traveling feeling. You may also feel an "electrical" sensation moving down the meridian pathways, though this is less common.
Bret and the Olympics
read moreBret was once a member of the World Military Taekwondo Team, training at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado. He always dreamed about making it to the Olympics. He attempted to qualify in Tae Kwan Do, twice, but never imagined acupuncture would take him to the games. At the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games IOC President Jacques Rogge described the international sporting event as "happy and glorious". This year's Games not only displayed sporting excellence, they also provided the stage for acupuncture and other natural healing modalities such as therapeutic taping.

Cupping can be added as an additional service as well as electrical stimulation for the needles. As far as insurance coverage for acupuncture, you should check with your carrier to see if they will reimburse you for your acupuncture treatments. Our office will provide you with the various codes and your invoice so that you may file with your particular carrier for reimbursement.
Your First Visit
read moreThe acupuncture intake form asks questions about your current state of health, past illnesses, and family history. These questions are important because the holistic approach of Oriental medicine takes everything into account. Your current symptoms may not seem related to past health issues, but our bodies are complex landscapes and everything that happens to them leaves its mark. After reviewing your intake form, we will discuss your condition and discuss whether or not acupuncture is a viable option for your particular situation.
New Patients
read moreMany first-time patients are concerned that acupuncture needles will feel like hypodermic injections at the doctor's office, but they won't. The acupuncture intake process will involve questions about your current state of health, past illnesses, and family history. You will then meet with the doctor for an initial consultation. There is no charge for this initial consultation.
Acupuncture FAQs
read moreDo I have to get disrobed? Not usually. Most of the time, the main needle-insertion points are on the lower legs, ears or arms, so wearing loose-fitting clothing is fine. Similar to medical doctors, sometimes an acupuncturist will ask you to disrobe and put on a gown if he needs to work on your back, upper legs or torso. How big are the needles and how deep are they inserted? The stainless steel needles, normally about as thin as a human hair, are pre-sterilized and disposable. Unlike the hollow needles used for giving injections, acupuncture needles are solid.
