read moreA panorex is a very impressive piece of imaging machinery in that it is capable of identifying many issues and structures that a normal x-ray is not. Initially you will sit in a chair with your chin on a small ledge. Once positioned in the machine, it will rotate around your entire head taking a full 360 degree view of the teeth, head, sinuses and bones. The ability to view the full structure of your head as a whole is very informative to the dentist. It will allow us to see any potential problems and make sure that everything is functioning as it should be.
Cavities
read moreDecay is caused by the build-up of a sticky film called plaque on the teeth. Plaque contains bacteria that feeds off of carbohydrates (starches and sugars) in the mouth. As the bacteria is feeding it produces acids that attack the tooth surface (enamel). If the plaque is not removed it continues to build up creating more acid that attacks the tooth enamel. As the enamel continues to be weakened, decay is able to set in and destroy the enamel. There is typically no pain when a cavity is just in the enamel but as it progresses to the underlying soft pulp layers where the nerves are located, you begin to feel pain.

Our hygienists use a special tool to carefully and gently remove the build-up that brushing and flossing can't. If the plaque and tarter are not removed and allowed to build up it can lead to more serious problems such as gum disease.
