Tara grew up in northern Minnesota. After high school, she simply crossed the river and attended the University of North Dakota. While at UND she was named to the President's List, and competed on the women's basketball staff. In 2000, she graduated from the Illinois College of Optometry, situated in Chicago. While in Chicago, she discovered a love for running, and competed in 4 marathons. In 1998 she married a longtime friend, Jason Ransdell, who is an optometrist.
