In many ways emergency services in Salem developed in parallel with national health care trends at the time. In the 1950s and early 1960s there was no organized emergency care in the US outside of teaching hospitals and even these teaching hospitals were marginally organized by today's standards. In community hospitals throughout the country the team physicians (of any specialty) were required, in rotation, to take emergency call, usually for a 24hr period. Most often this was done from the office during the daytime with the patients being directed to the office.
