I was born in Ankara, Turkey. My family and I immigrated to the US when I was 7 years old. I spent the most of my childhood in Long Island, New York. I attended Cornell University on a scholarship where I received my Bachelor's Degree in microbiology. I received my Medical Degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in 1984. I had the honor, while in Medical school, to be the Director of the National Student Research Forum and the Vice President of my class.
