SBMS was established in 1976 by a group of students, parents, and teachers concerned about the junior high years. This group, many of them are still involved, sought to build a school that would combine an innovative, challenging academic program with an environment responsive to the many requirements of adolescent students. For three decades Santa Barbara Middle School has worked to fulfill and exceed these aims. Enrollment in our dynamic student body is limited to the middle grades, our specialty. We understand teenagers. Our well-structured curriculum emphasizes depth, individualization, and engagement. Year after year, we modify our program to meet the rigorous academic requirements of a rapidly changing world. Community service provides awareness of social issues and SBMS students gain exposure to many career possibilities and responsibilities through our annual career study week.
