Richard was an athletic child. Growing up in St. Louis, Missouri, he played ice hockey from the ages of 5 to 13. He played football, ran track, and lifted weights. As a child, Richard's family had dogs and birds, and often rescued stray cats. Moving to California at the age of 17, he worked several jobs including automotive painting. After hanging up his spray guns, he went on to manage the shop. Richard returned to school and received a Bachelor's Degree in Conservation Biology (volunteering at the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito)
