Mission

To awaken theological imagination across culture, tradition and generation, through educational and spiritual “third spaces” that connect the body of Christ for faithful presence in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The current moment calls for communal reflection across the diverse body of Christ, informed by theology and rooted in the Spirit. We envision a multiethnic community of emerging leaders and the seasoned faithful who together discern and engage the present challenges of our day.  We seek to foster mutual learning and lasting friendship across cultures, traditions, and bay area boundaries. Ultimately, we want to spark collective gospel imagination for this place.

New College Berkeley is an affiliate center of distinction at the Graduate Theological Union and a member of the Consortium of Christian Study Centers.

from past to present

New College Berkeley (NCB) was founded in 1979 by Dr. David Gill and Rev. Dr. Earl Palmer as a Center for Advanced Christian Studies to provide students and working professionals with courses and conferences to “think Christianly” in their vocational lives. In 1994, Dr. Susan Phillips introduced a needed emphasis on spiritual formation for cultivating souls centered in God. Today, under the leadership of Executive Director Craig Wong, NCB builds on these two pillars to connect the Body - across culture, tradition and generation - to pursue truth, cultivate spiritual friendship, and discern what it means to live faithfully at a significant cultural inflection point for nation and world.
