Thank you, El Paso, for 38 great years!

Bobby Maddox, M.D.At the present time, Dr. Maddox is performing all laser surgeries in his laser center in El Paso.

The first thing you need to find out is whether you are a candidate for the LASIK surgery or other surgical procedures. About 15 to 20% of patients are NOT good candidates for Laser Vision Correction. Often times, patients believe all they have to do is to find out what their glasses or contact lens prescription is and that will tell the doctor whether or not they are candidates for the surgery. That simply is not true. Most free screenings are worthless in the sense that a free screening can miss up to 15% to 20% of the patients who are not candidates. That is why Dr. Maddox himself will evaluate each patient with multiple in-depth advanced technological studies in order to eliminate the 15% to 20% of patients who are not good candidates for the surgery in his “free consultation” (not just a simple “screening” with a technician or non-surgeon).

It is best for you to call the office and discuss over the phone (not internet) prices, method of payment such as cash discounted fee, credit or debit card, or financing through your bank or through www.CareCredit.com, and discussion of insurance coverage. We honor LASIK discount programs offered by employer health plans. Just bring in your LASIK discount card and see how much you can save. We even provide special LASIK discounts for pateints that are not members of a LASIK discount program. Unfortunately, most insurance companies do not cover the LASIK procedure and those that do only cover a small portion of the fee. You would need to check with your insurance company to see what they might cover for the LASIK procedure and have that information available to us when you call. Again, it is much better for you to call us for the information vs. e-mailing us for details. If you are not available to call us during working hours please either leave a message on our answer machine or just e-mail and we can set up a time for you to call after or before working hours. We are very flexible in this regard.

All procedures are performed at MADDOX LASER EYE CENTER in El Paso and include Custom LASIK, Cataract surgery, cosmetic eyelid surgery for puffy eyelids, Botox, and dermal fillers like Restylane or Juvederm for wrinkles and facial rejuvenation. He also performs routine medical eye examinations and gives out glasses prescriptions at our new El Paso laser center. (Click here for contact information).

Having performed his first Excimer Laser Vision procedures in January 1992, Dr. Bobby Maddox became the first Ophthalmologist (MD and Eye Surgeon) in the El Paso area to perform the Laser Vision Correction with the Excimer Laser, years before it was performed by other eye surgeons in the El Paso area. He also was one of the Eye Surgeons who helped pioneer the procedure and is recognized as the one of the very early Excimer Eximer Laser pioneers and instructors of the Laser Vision Procedure throughout the United States and the world.

UNIQUE MADDOX APPROACH TO THE LASIK PROCEDURE:

Presently, Dr. Bobby Maddox, MD Eye Surgeon performs all preoperative measurements himself. He has streamlined his practice so that he is able to spend quality time with each patient and personally performs all “free” consultations (not simple, superficial “screenings”) himself. If one is indeed a candidate for the procedure he performs the complete workup, surgery, and all post-op follow-up visits. Dr.Maddox is well known for his communicative skills and gifted bedside manner, making sure that the patient, family members, and the doctor are on the same page at all times. This is why he cordially invites family members or close friends to accompany the patient so that all can get the information directly from Dr. Maddox and thereby avoid any miscommunication. Consistency in results depends on many factors. Among those is the fact that Dr. Maddox does not have others obtain his preoperative measurements for him but instead he makes sure that he personally performs them and knows exactly what they are. In this way he is able to combine his unique and personalized measuring techniques, which harmonize with the programming and delivery of the EXCIMER LASER, and his special Laser technique whereby he is more able to maximize consistency and quality of results. Dr. Maddox gathers the data on each patient and meticulously calculates the specific amount of correction for the customized treatment and then verifies that this information is entered properly into the sofware of the Excimer Laser prior to treatment. He is responsible for verifying Laser calibration on each patient, which helps to ensure the accuracy and consistency of results. The valuable supporting staff of many years helps to insure even further consistency in the flow of the procedure, sterilizing methods, patient communication, and so on, which leads to better quality patient care.

Because of Dr. Maddox’s vast experience and pioneering efforts with this procedure he has developed some very unique surgical methods for achieving a more stable and smooth corneal flap that has been a tremendous benefit to retaining optical clarity following the procedure vs. other standard methods. Through his pioneering efforts he has been recognized for his work and discovering and naming a new “Syndrome” that he originally called “Sands of the Sahara” Syndrome now referred to as DLK.

He offers the convenience to the patient of having the Excimer Laser in the office and the flexibility to perform the LASIK procedure just about any day of the week. This way he can schedule a limited number of patients per day and give each patient more personal one-on-one quality care from beginning to end. This type of care given by the surgeon is rare where most surgeons have others doing most of the preparatory work and even follow-up visits

Dr. Maddox received his medical training and his Doctor of Medicine degree (MD) from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas in 1970. After a one year rotating internship in Austin, Texas at Brackenridge Hospital, where he delivered babies, and performed a pediatric, medicine, and emergency room rotation, he completed a 3-year Residency program in Ophthalmology (diagnosis of eye diseases and eye surgery) at Brown University and Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island. There is a huge confusion between the training of an optometrist (OD) and ophthalmologist (MD) and both are called “eye doctors” by the general public. The primary difference in training is the ophthalmologist (MD) first goes through medical school and earns and MD degree, 1 year hospital internship, and then enters a 3 to 4 year residency hospital training program in eye surgery, diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases, contact lenses, and glasses prescriptions. The ophthalmologist (MD) is trained in his or her hospital residency training program just as other medical and surgical sub-specialties, such as a heart surgeon, brain surgeon, orthopedic surgeon, internal medicine, pediatrics, etc. The optometrist or doctor of optometry (OD) goes to optometry school just like a pharmacist goes to pharmacy school and does not attend medical school and does not complete a 3 to 4 year comprehensive in- hospital training program, as does the MD ophthalmologist. As a consequence, the optometrist is not trained to perform eye surgery such as LASIK, cataract surgery, cosmetic eyelid surgery, etc. Even though both are referred to as “eye doctors”, there is a major difference in educational background, training, and experience in managing pre and post-op LASIK patients.

Procedures performed at our laser center in El Paso include Custom LASIK, Cataract surgery, cosmetic eyelid surgery for puffy eyelids, Botox, and dermal fillers like Restylane or Juvederm for wrinkles and facial rejuvenation. He also performs routine medical eye examinations and gives out glasses prescriptions at our new El Paso laser center located at 601 Sunland Park Drive; building #2.Our phone number is 915-881-8100. Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Dr. Maddox performs cosmetic surgery of the “puffy” lower eyelids in a unique way that requires no skin incision and therefore no skin sutures. The goal of the “transconjunctival approach” accessing the fat through the back surface or inside (conjunctiva) of the lower eyelid vs. through the outside or skin of the lower eyelid is to reduce the fatty bulges and to improve skin folds and skin texture. Pronounced bulges of the lower lids contribute to the “tired look” with circles under the eyes. This is obviously very noticeable to others and more so to you when you look in the mirror.
