San Diego's Historic LGBTQ+ Bar Since 1930
Founded in the 1930s as San Diego's first gay bar, The Brass Rail has evolved into a historic LGBTQ+ landmark. Originally located in Downtown's Orpheum Theatre building, we relocated to Hillcrest in the 1960s and have maintained our legacy as a family-owned establishment for over 55 years. Our modern lounge-style atmosphere blends brick, wood, and corrugated textures with inviting indoor/outdoor spaces, offering artisanal cocktails, craft beers, and a vibrant nightlife scene. Under new LGBTQ+ ownership since 2024, we've revitalized drag brunches, theme nights, and inclusive programming while preserving our cultural heritage. Our team brings decades of local hospitality experience, hosting diverse events from Latin Night to Queer and Trans Nights. As a community hub, we support fundraisers and emerging performers while maintaining our status as one of San Diego's premier social destinations. Located at 5th and Robinson in Hillcrest, we combine historical reverence with forward-thinking vision to create welcoming spaces for connection, celebration, and belonging.
