Welcome to First United Methodist Church
First United Methodist Church is a small, queer-affirming fellowship with a deep commitment to social justice activism. Our congregation has transitioned from traditional church practices to a community-responsive model focused on building relationships and power with the most vulnerable. We partner with local organizations like Common Good Tacoma to address systemic inequities through initiatives such as migrant support, food assistance, and anti-racism education. Our worship services emphasize participatory liturgy, collective learning, and dismantling oppressive structures. With over a decade of pastoral leadership experience, Rev. Shalom guides our mission to create a multi-racial, inclusive space where faith intersects with actionable compassion. We maintain transparent operations through regular community updates and financial accountability, welcoming all to join our journey toward liberation and neighborly solidarity.

Services
Worship Services
Our inclusive worship gatherings follow printed liturgy with open participation in scripture readings and communion. Services emphasize collective leadership over hierarchical roles, focusing on themes of liberation theology and anti-racism practices. Weekly Lenten worship and bi-monthly Sunday services provide spiritual nourishment through a justice-oriented lens.
Community Outreach
Common Good Tacoma initiatives include migrant housing partnerships, meal programs, and coalition-building with local organizations. We prioritize collaborations that empower marginalized communities through structural change and resource sharing. Programs address systemic inequities while creating spaces for interfaith and intercultural dialogue.
Bible Study
Decolonizing Bible study sessions explore scripture through anti-oppression frameworks using Enfleshed liturgy commentaries. These educational programs examine biblical texts in historical and contemporary contexts, emphasizing liberation theology and practical applications for modern social justice work.
Migrant Support
Emergency housing partnerships and donation drives assist migrants through collaborations with The Bridge and other organizations. Our response includes financial support, shelter coordination, and advocacy efforts addressing root causes of displacement. Community members volunteer time and resources to meet immediate needs while working for systemic change.
Food Assistance
My Sister's Pantry distributes groceries monthly with flexible access options, while Power of Two provides personalized support for families in need. Emergency food assistance remains available beyond regular distribution times through community partnerships and volunteer networks operating throughout Pierce County.
