Your Trusted Community Arts School in Independence, MO
Founded in 1979 by four experienced musicians, Music/Arts Institute (MAI) began as a grassroots initiative to provide accessible music education in a dining room with $500 contributions from its founders. Over 45 years, MAI expanded into a premier community arts school serving the Kansas City metro area, offering training in music, dance, and performing arts. Our mission focuses on technical excellence, performance opportunities, and nurturing lifelong appreciation for the arts, with programs like private lessons, ensemble groups, and the George Caleb Bingham Academy summer immersion. We prioritize inclusivity through scholarship programs that ensure financial barriers don't limit access to quality arts education. With a faculty of dedicated instructors, MAI has produced award-winning students and alumni who pursue careers in prestigious music institutions and performance groups globally.

Our collaborations with local schools, arts organizations, and universities create unique performance opportunities across diverse venues. While emphasizing career preparation, we equally value developing personal discipline, creativity, and critical thinking skills applicable to any life path. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we maintain transparency in operations and rely on community support to sustain our mission. Our facility in Independence, MO, houses specialized studios for music, dance, and creative media instruction. Through continuous program expansion and faculty development, MAI remains committed to evolving with the changing needs of young artists while preserving our founding principles of accessibility and excellence.
