Permian Basin's Premier Geological Data Library Since 1962
Subsurface Library has served the Permian Basin's energy sector for over six decades, providing unparalleled access to geological data critical for oil and gas exploration. Founded in 1962 by geologist Dick Rousselot and landman King Hughes, our institution was established to meet the industry's need for centralized, accessible well data. Our collection has grown to include over one million well logs, 25,000 sample logs, and extensive scout ticket archives, making us the premier geological data source for the highest-producing oil and gas basin in the United States. Through strategic acquisitions of historical datasets from major operators like Marathon Oil and Mobil, we've built a repository that combines legacy information with current analytics. Our 18,000-square-foot facility in Midland, Texas houses both physical records and digital tools for data analysis, while our Austin office provides access to state agency records.

We maintain reciprocal agreements with 12 regional geological libraries, expanding our members' access to critical industry information. Our team of professionals offers geotechnical services and reproduction capabilities to support modern exploration needs. With continuous updates to our database and advanced search functionality, we ensure clients can efficiently locate both historical and newly released well data. Our commitment to preserving and expanding this vital resource has made us an essential partner for energy companies operating in the Permian Basin. We continue to evolve our offerings, integrating digital tools like Energy Domain Data with traditional resources to meet changing industry demands.

Services
Well Data
Our comprehensive well data collection includes over one million logs from the 1920s to present, featuring electric logs, sample logs, and mud logs. We provide access to both released and unreleased datasets donated by major energy companies. This critical information helps operators reduce exploration risk and improve reservoir performance through detailed subsurface analysis.
Scout Tickets
We maintain eight historical oil company scout ticket collections dating from the 1920s through 2000s, including Amerada Petroleum and Marathon Oil records. These documents provide valuable insights into past exploration activities and production trends. Our searchable Amerada collection offers complete geological records from the early days of Permian Basin exploration through 1972.
Geotech Services
Our geotech services provide access to well records at four key state agencies: Texas Railroad Commission, Bureau of Economic Geology, Texas General Land Office, and University Lands. For $35/hour, our professionals can retrieve historical and current data including well logs, drilling permits, and production reports from these repositories to support exploration projects.
Lease Maps
We offer Midland Map Company's classic style lease and ownership maps covering the Permian Basin from the 1930s to 2000s. These detailed maps provide clarity on current lease activity and surface ownership information at the county level. The collection includes both historical records and current data to support land acquisition and development decisions.
Data Reproduction
Our reproduction services include digital scanning of microfiche logs and creation of PDF/TIF files for modern use. We maintain a microfiche viewer-printer-scanner to convert historical records into usable formats. This service supports clients needing to access legacy data in contemporary digital workflows for analysis and reporting purposes.
