Advocates for North Carolina's Private Colleges and Universities
Nc Independent Colleges & University (NCICU) serves as the unified voice for private, nonprofit higher education institutions across the state. Our organization represents 36 diverse colleges and universities, including research universities, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), women's colleges, and specialized professional schools. We advocate for policies that strengthen independent higher education at the state and federal levels while coordinating collaborative programs to enhance institutional effectiveness. Our member institutions collectively enroll over 83,000 students from all 100 North Carolina counties, 50 states, and international locations, awarding one in four bachelor's degrees and one in three graduate degrees in the state. Through the Independent College Fund of North Carolina, we administer scholarship programs and enrichment initiatives like the Ethics Bowl and Undergraduate Research Symposium. Our economic impact analysis demonstrates $14.2 billion in annual contributions to North Carolina's economy through education, employment, and community engagement.

We provide administrative support for 19 campus functional groups, facilitate counselor campus tours, and develop strategic partnerships to reduce institutional costs. Our board of directors comprises all 36 institutional presidents, ensuring direct representation in policy decisions. We maintain accreditation through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) and Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools (TRACS). Our commitment to affordability is demonstrated through $1.3 billion in annual institutional aid and advocacy for state funding programs like the North Carolina Need-Based Scholarship.
