For over fifteen years, we've been making strong, attractive, all wood bookcases and cabinets, including audio/visual cases, CD and record cases, hutches, desks, file cabinets, tables and other furniture. Our mission in everything we make is strong, long-lived woodwork of best quality, with simple gracefuIness and beauty, at a competitive price. We make our cases and cabinets in our own Chicago workshop. We currently have many standard sizes, but we welcome odd sizes and custom designs - often at little more cost.

read moreSince our beginnings in Hyde Park over thirty years ago, 57th Street Bookcase has strived to build strong, long-lasting bookcases and cabinetry, simple in design and construction and all the more beautiful for it. We believe quality woodwork should be accessibly priced, that a bookcase or cabinet should last from home to home or even, and as has been the case, from generation to generation. Thirty years ago, in a small garage behind Hyde Park's famous Medici restaurant, our business began with unfinished pine bookcases at a few standard sizes.

read moreWe're proud to be among the few woodworkers who still finish their work by hand. Though labor-intensive, we believe that hand-rubbing our oils and stains results in a superior finish. Machine-sprayed finishes leave the wood looking and feeling like plastic; hand-finishing, by contrast, allows the natural beauty of the wood to shine through. On our hardwoods, our default finish is three coats of Danish oil and one coat of wax. Pieces in pine are unfinished by default. A variety of stains is available on both hardwood and pine made-to-order pieces.
