AmASSI is a non-profit, community based health, wellness and cultural affirmation center. AmASSI is an acronym for the African American Advocacy, Support-Services & Survival Institute. We supply preventive health for HIV/AIDS, STDs, cancer, diabetes, etc. Psychological and therapeutic assistance and math and literacy tutoring, skills building opportunities and empowerment. At the AmASSI Center, community members are culturally respected and affirmed, and all services are free and low cost.

Since 1989, AmASSI has transformed the lives of over 200,000 people of African descent, with projects in Baltimore, Washington DC, New York City, Oakland/Bay area, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Miami and the Hilbrow District of Johannesburg in Azania (or South Africa). AmASSI has been recognized as a model for health improvement strategies, identified by the United States Conference of Mayors Best Practices Center as a Best Practices organization, the American Journal of Public Health, POZ Magazine, AIDS Action, and the California Wellness Foundation.

Our primary point of concentration is on ending health disparities, life-span interruption, self-image, and inter-group conflict among diverse people of African descent. Uniquely, AmASSI combines skills- building and educational programs regarding the primary and secondary prevention of communicable disease, substance misuse and various health threats.
