In 1839 five mounted Scouts ranged over a broad area of wilderness seeking a site for a capital city for The Republic of Texas. A location on the N bank of the Colorado River was chosen, where beauty and natural resources were abundant. The site was occupied at the time by a four-family settlement who had given this area the name Waterloo because of its' bountiful springs. William Barton was among these families - this area today is, rightfully so, called Barton Springs.
