On February 18, 1905, the Kansas State Banking Department issued a charter to The Citizens State Bank of Atlanta, Kansas - thus started the entity which would eventually become Citizens Bank of Kansas. Herbert H, Bert? Smith was president of The Citizens State Bank of Atlanta from 1918 after purchasing stock of the new bank from his uncle, charter stockholder, Charles Foust. In 1924, young Ray J. Deterding started working for Smith at the bank; in 1925, he married Inez Smith - the banker's daughter! Ray became president of the bank shortly thereafter, and continued in that role until his death in 1963.
