S East Area Health Education Center was set up in 1973 and is one of nine AHECs under the North Carolina statewide AHEC Program founded to attract, retain, and maintain best quality health care specialists in all areas of the state. SEAHEC is administered by the Health Sciences Foundation. An educational non-profit organization governed by a board of directors. SEAHEC and New Hanover Regional Medical Center work together through an affiliation agreement to conduct residency training programs and student rotations.

Through community collaboration and various initiatives, SEAHEC has worked to provide resources to the region to combat opiate misuse. The NC AHEC Program began in 1972 to address national and state concerns with the supply, distribution, and retention of health care professionals. In 1974, the State of North Carolina's General Assembly supported a plan to create a statewide network.
