Philosophy of Psychotherapy
read moreMost likely an overwhelming number of names of providers, maybe some of the services they offer, and issues that they may work with. However, beyond this very little is offered to assist a potential patient in making an informed decision about what kind of therapy they need, what kind of therapist best suits them and their particular situation. Consequently, people are often left to select a therapist based simply on the kinds of problems a therapist may specialize in, the savvy of a therapist's advertisement, or a recommendation of a friend.
Psychotherapy
read moreThe previous section spoke to my underlying philosophical concepts of counseling and psychotherapy. The following speaks briefly to the individual, couples, and family therapy services that I provide. People tend to seek out individual counseling for one of two basic reasons; (1) they are unhappy with some aspect of their life and want to change or (2) they are relatively happy with their life and are looking for more personal growth or greater fulfillment in life. Most people who come to individual counseling come because they are typically unhappy about some aspect of their life and would like things to be different.
Questions About
read moreDuring sessions you are expected to talk about the primary concerns and issues in your life. A session lasts 50-55 minutes, but some people request longer sessions. Usually weekly sessions are best. Some people who are in crisis or extreme distress need more than one session per week, at least until the crisis passes. During the time between sessions it is beneficial to think about and process what was discussed. At times, you may be asked to take certain actions outside of the therapy sessions, such as reading a relevant book or keeping records.
