In 1991 Mike decided to do what he loved as a business and started creating custom furniture. He was approached to do a kitchen and Crowder's Custom Cabinets was born. He started designing and building custom kitchen cabinets in his garage with his wife, Joyce, as his only sander/helper. He soon had so much work that he had to move out of the garage into a tiny shop behind a shopping center and hired one employee. Word spread about his quality craftsmanship and business increased so much that he moved into a bigger shop in downtown Newport News and eventually added 11 employees.
