In 1980, Howard Worrell, owner of one of Virginia's biggest moving and storage agencies, made a substantial investment in a new computer system for his firm. Purported to be specifically for the industry, this system subsequently gave two years of total frustration and mounting expense. Realizing the futility of these efforts, he finally scrapped it totally and started the arduous task of designing a system better fitted to the requirements of a mover. The main aim was to have a complete, completely integrated operations and accounting computer system specifically for use in an agency.

Eventual ownership of two moving companies and two trucking companies provided a knowledge of the transportation industry as well as the impetus for Direct Systems. Lynsey has, literally, grown up at Direct Systems, assisting with various office tasks throughout high school and during her years at Virginia Commonwealth University.
