read moreIt's more important than ever to clean your teeth and gums with braces on. Plaque is soft, sticky, light colored clusters of bacteria build-up if teeth haven't been brushed for more than a few hours. If plaque doesn't get brushed off at least twice a day, it can harden and cause permanent stains, cavities, and may cause gum disease. The objective of orthodontic treatment is straightening of the teeth and correcting the bite. If the health of the teeth is ignored along the way, the treatment result can be significantly compromised.

read moreWhen your braces are placed onto your teeth, you will experience some moderate soreness and eating tough foods such as meats and raw vegetables will cause you some pain. For the first week, you should only eat foods which do not require you to strain your teeth too hard. Over time, this sensitivity will disappear and you will be able to eat just about anything. Just remember that you are eating with your braces so certain foods can actually damage and get caught in them. Certain foods are less likely to damage your braces and wires if you cut them into small pieces rather than biting directly into an apple, for example.

We'll be able to schedule an appointment to resolve the problem. You might be surprised to learn that you may be able to solve many problems yourself temporarily until you can get to our office. If there is a loose piece that you can remove, put it in a plastic bag or envelope and bring it with you to your next appointment. If your braces are poking you, put soft wax on the piece that's sticking out.
