About Us
read moreFamily Vision Associates was opened in March of 1979 by Dr. Norman Smith and one employee in an 800 Sq-Ft office. The original business card listed Dr. Smith's name and a description that read "Family Vision Care and Contact Lenses". As the practice developed, patients began to write checks to "Family Vision Care" as if that were the name of the business. Rather than correct them, we adopted the name Family Vision Associates when we moved into the current building in 1984. Dr. Mike Lawson joined in 1984, Dr. John Allen joined the practice in 2008, and became owner in January 2012, Dr. Linda Cadena joined us in 2012, and Susan Behrens joined in 2013.
Children's Eye Exam
read moreChildren's ability to learn, discover, explore and build physical coordination depends largely on how well they can see even during the first year of life. Refractive abnormalities in the eyes, poor eye function and visual coordination problems can all have an enormous impact on your child's development, comfort, safety and quality of life. That's why it's so important to schedule a Corpus Christi children's eye exam for your little one at regular intervals. Here at Family Vision Associates, any Corpus Christi optometrist on our skilled team will be happy to check your child's eyes and vision.
Management of Ocular Diseases
read moreSome eye diseases are acute in nature, causing discomfort and other issues for a period of time and then disappearing. But there are some conditions that cause direct harm to the eye itself, destroying the structures that allow you to see the world clearly. The damage created by some of these diseases is permanent, which is why early detection through regular eye exams is so important. Even if you have a chronic ocular disease, prompt treatment can slow or even arrest the destruction, thus preserving your vision.
Pre & Post LASIK Care
read moreLASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) is an amazing surgical procedure in many ways -- not only does it do a remarkable job of restoring visual clarity for many patients suffering from refractive disorders, but the surgery itself is remarkably quick and easy for the patient. But there's more to LASIK than the actual surgery; you also need to make sure you're a good candidate for the procedure, get the necessary preparatory evaluations, and then pursue important follow-up care to ensure the best possible results.
Optomap
read moreAt Family Vision Associates, we pride ourselves on providing our patients with the best possible standard of care. Because of this our doctors want ALL patients to have a digital image of the retina annually with the new scanning digital imaging system called the Optomap. The Optomap is a 200 degree laser, digital, image of the retina. It is a permanent record of the back of the eye, an eye scan, much like a body scan. The Optomap provides early detection of Diabetes, Hypertension and many retinal diseases.
Optical Coherent Tomography
read moreOptical coherence tomography is a type of test that takes a picture of your eye. Our Corpus Christi optometrist performs optical coherence tomography (OCT) to detect disease or other problems that may be affecting your eye. OCT is a non-invasive test that uses light waves to capture images of your retina, which is the light-sensitive area inside the back of your eye. The retina has several distinctive layers and each layer performs a different task. OCT can capture images of each layer; the technology can also map each layer and measure its thickness.
