About Us
read moreMy name is Lawrence Carlisle III and I am the Artistic Director here at your Gilbert Theater. I say "your" because, like any community theater, the Gilbert lives or dies based on your support. And the fact that we've been going strong for 26 years speaks volumes about the strength of the work we do here, and, the strength of the community we live in. A lot of times "community theater" is used in a pejorative, condescending manner. As some kind of insult or way to lessen the impact theater has on the lives of the people who choose to give their time, money, expertise, creativity and love to it.

Used as the basis for the Alfred Hitchcock classic starring Jimmy Stewart, "Rope" promises to be a thriller you'll want to "hang around" to see! This project is supported by the Arts Council in part by contributions from businesses and individuals, and through grants from the City of Fayetteville, Cumberland County and the North Carolina Arts Council, an agency of the Department of Cultural Resources.
History of The Gilbert
read moreWelcome from A (attic) to Z (zoning) to our look back at the perfect evenings and matinees held at the Gilbert Theater. How many did you see or work on? As I freshly look over the twenty-five plus years of Gilbert "welcomings", I'm reminded of a dozen different ways we have done just that. The house theater days at 647 Brandts Lane, 1994-2002 were a unique kind of welcome, a rapidly turning kaleidoscope breaking ground, tradition, and backs. When site lines (play-going bugaboos for centuries) required me to separate tall and short patrons if need be in that small space, I was challenged only once.
