Modern buildings are more or less assembled, but old buildings were made. Trained craftsmen hand fabricated the building from raw materials. Restoring old buildings - remaking them - is even more difficult. It requires not only these same skills, and same raw materials, but an understanding of historic design and the appropriate use of modern materials. Since 1987, Grand River Builders has been delivering these skills to historic building restoration projects in West Michigan. We're successful because at the middle of Grand River Builders is a craftsman, not a contractor.

We inventory a selection of custom milled lumber, and we're able to make the tools we need to turn those into the boards we need. We include special attention to the mechanics of moisture: avoiding moisture contact, managing dimensional changes, treating susceptible pieces with chemicals, and detailing how water will drop free of the building. Careful design and the right materials are a better investment than caulk.
