Ed had been operating in the photography field and had just spent 10 weeks in a specialty wood class. Around 1995, The Guardsman Company, manufacturer of furniture finishes, stains and care products, had just introduced the Guardsman WoodPro franchise. Coming from the mid-W, both Ed and Brian were familiar with the firm, which was located in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
