The brain and spinal cord form the central nervous system, which is the master control system of the body, coordinating all tissues, organs and systems within the body. The regulation and control of all body organs and systems is carried out by nerve impulses that begin in the brain and are transmitted down the spinal cord to various organs and tissues. The spinal cord is protected by vertebral bones that are arranged in such a fashion as to allow human beings to be mobile and flexible.
