What is a Cataract
read moreA cataract is what we call a lens in the eye that has become cloudy. When you see someone who has a cataract, they will typically have a gray or blue tint to their eye where the pupil is (the part that normally appears black). Cataracts can be caused by many things, including trauma and even reactions to certain medications. However, cataracts develop naturally with age (partially because of exposure to ultraviolet light), and that's why most people who have cataracts tend to be 60 or older. Your grandparents or great-grandparents may have had cataract surgery using older surgical techniques that required them to wear thick cataract glasses after their procedure.
Implantable Contact Lens
read moreThe Implantable Contact Lens (ICL) or Visian lens is also frequently referred to as a phakic IOL. The ICL is a small, injectable lens that is inserted through a tiny, 3mm incision that does not usually require sutures. The procedure is performed on one eye at a time and is a five-minute procedure. The ICL provides predictable outcomes and excellent quality of vision. If there are major changes in one's vision, the ICL can easily be removed and replaced. It is designed to remain in place within the eye without maintenance.
Patient Forms
read moreCertain forms are required of all patients, but some of the forms require information that you'll have better access to at home. By printing and filling these forms in advance, we can serve you in a more timely manner. If you have to fill them out at the office, that's alright, but preparing them at home will help us provide you with more complete, accurate and efficient care. Having LASIK has changed my life! Before coming to see Dr. Iskander I had been wearing glasses or contacts for 18 out of 24 years of my life.
Toric ICL Treatments
read moreSan Antonio Eye Specialists offers various refractive vision correction options beyond LASIK. Patients that have high amounts of nearsightedness (myopia) plus astigmatism, may benefit from the Visian Toric ICL, or Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL), created by STAAR Surgical. Our Medical Director, Nader Iskander, MD, FACS, a board-certified ophthalmologist, and fellowship-trained refractive specialist, was one of the first surgeons in the country to implant the Visian Toric ICL. This revolutionary technology allows patients that are not good candidates for laser vision procedures, such as LASIK, to get the clear vision they deserve without the bothersome hassles of contact lenses or glasses.

Always seek the advice of your physician or other qualified health care provider. I was scared to have cataract surgery after I was diagnosed by my optometrist. After going to several ophthalmologist in town, I decided to go with Dr. Iskander of San Antonio Eye Specialists because I felt most comfortable with him. He took the time to explain the difference between modern cataract removal and old fashion cataract surgery like my mother had.
