For more than 35 years, the practice has grown and continues to offer world-class technology and down-to-earth values. Dr. Bluth pioneered the concept of bringing the doctor to the patient and bringing comprehensive eye care to rural and underserved areas throughout Arizona. On a given morning, three to four airplanes take Southwestern Eye Center ophthalmologists and their crews to outlying offices and ambulatory surgery centers where operations for cataracts, retinal disease, glaucoma, and oculoplastics are performed on those who are unable to travel to or afford care in larger metropolitan centers.

For certain age groups, it may be alright to have an exam every two years; however, if you are a senior or have diabetes it is a good idea to be checked every six to twelve months. Be sure to consult your eye care professional regarding the consistency of eye exams that you should maintain. Our eye doctors will explain the ideal consistency of eye exams you should maintain. If left untreated, dry eye disease can lead to serious eye problems, even blindness. Dry eyes are irritated and inflamed eyes. Inflammation of the front surface of the eye increases the risk of some infections and can lead to scarring. Dry Eye Disease has many causes, all of which in one way or another disrupt the tear film. The tear film plays several important roles in keeping your eyes healthy and your vision clear.

read moreThe eyeball is a hollow organ connected to the brain by the optic nerve. On entering the eye, the optic nerve spreads out in a thin layer of nervous tissue-the retina-and covers the inside of the eye like wallpaper. The inside of the eye is filled with a transparent, jelly-like material called the vitreous. Disorders of the vitreous body are related to the normal aging process in which the jelly begins to liquefy, resulting in a mixture of liquid and gel. Where the solid and liquid meet in the eye, debris tends to gather, resulting in "floaters" or small cobwebs that we see when we move our eyes.

read moreLASIK or (Laser in-Situ Keratomileusis) treats refractive errors by reshaping or flattening the curve of the corneal tissue beneath the surface of the cornea using the excimer laser. The excimer laser is able to create extremely accurate, intense pulses of light that produce very little heat and leave surrounding tissue untouched. LASIK uses a beam of cool light to reshape the top layer (less than 10 percent) of the cornea, so that images focus correctly on the retina. The computer, controlled by your LASIK eye surgeon, is used to precisely calculate the exact amount of cornea that needs to be removed for each person's individual eyes.
