The roots of the Department of Community Health and the Environment date back to 1958 when the St. Charles County Nursing Service was created. The service began tiny, with just one public health nurse and a secretary, but grew over the next two decades. In 1975, the service extended to include animal control and environmental services. As the county grew, two departments developed: the County Health Department and the County Department of Humane and Environmental Services.
