Neon is an illuminated sign that is began with a design and a pattern. You then take a 4' clear tube and from there it is bent into words, shapes, designs, and border tubes. After that process you purify the tube to 500 degrees to prep for the colored gases. From there you get all the different neon colors. It is then mounted on a piece of black Plexiglas without the use of faces, returns, or backs that are common in channel letters. Open Exposed Neon is nothing like a channel letter.
