Phyllis Wheatley Community Center opened its doors in 1924 as a settlement house. The center was the 1st agency in the Twin Cities committed to meetingthe human service requirements of a growing African-American community. Throughout the agency's history, it has reinvented itself to reply to the changing requirements and conditions in the community. In its early years, Phyllis Wheatley was a safe place for young African American women to seek shelter, receive guidance and marketable skill development.

Our Programs
read moreOur community-based early childhood education center provides comprehensive high-quality services to children ages 16 months to five years old. In three developmentally appropriate classrooms, we provide learning to foster cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development. Our low staff-to-child ratio allows teachers to get to know the students and their families and partner in each child's development. This program is made accessible to the community through low-cost tuition, scholarships, and assistance.
