Pittsburgh Veterinary Specialists had its humble beginnings with the mobile surgical practice of Dr. Anthony Pardo, Pittsburgh Veterinary Surgery, in September of 1993. In 1994, a group of North Hills veterinarians opened an after-hours emergency service, the Veterinary Emergency Clinic (VEC) in Shaler Township. Shortly thereafter, Pittsburgh Veterinary Surgery opened a stationary practice at the Shaler location. A 2nd surgeon was added in 1996, soon to be joined by an Internal Medicine practice and an Ophthalmologist (1997) and later.
