Preparing for a Funeral Service
read moreCould there be anything more difficult than preparing for a funeral? Certainly, such an end-of-life event is hard to look forward to with any great enthusiasm. And it doesn't matter if you're a member of the bereaved inner circle of close family, a co-worker, neighbor or family friend; preparing for a funeral service takes time and forethought. If you're preparing to attend a funeral, memorial service, or celebration of life, the following tips and suggestions can certainly help in your funeral preparations.
What is a Funeral
read moreFor thousands of years, funerals have been a means of expressing our beliefs, thoughts and feelings about the death of someone we love. In the United States today, over 2 million people pass away every year. Most are honored with some sort of ceremony that is arranged with the help of a professional funeral director. The funeral service has come to fill two important roles in our society today. First, it provides dignified and respectful care for the dead. Second, it provides a setting and an opportunity for family and friends to celebrate the life that has been lived.
Memorial Service Information
read moreUnlike a traditional funeral, a memorial service is a gathering where a casket is not present (although the urn with the cremated remains may be on display). A memorial service can be held weeks or even months after the death. A memorial service can be held in a church, the funeral home or a community hall, or somewhere of importance to the deceased and family. There is usually music, selected readings, and a eulogy. Memorial services can be further personalized as a celebration-of-life. Our experience has shown us that many of today's families want more than a traditional funeral.
Burial Services
read moreThe earliest human burial dates back 100,000 years making it one of the longest-lived and most widespread of traditions. For an overview of the many different burial traditions, check out the websites in the Resources section below. We have the deepest respect for this traditional practice. If you are interested in learning more about the burial services we offer, please review the following information. Should you have questions about anything, please call us. There are many things to consider when deciding whether to bury a recently-deceased loved one, or when selecting burial during funeral pre-planning.
What to Expect Before
read moreIt's a common enough experience; a loved one dies and now you've got to face something you've never ever done before. You've got to go to a funeral home to make their funeral arrangements. Now, not only are you emotionally affected by their death, you're anxious and really need to know what to expect when you arrive. So, let's talk about that for a bit. While we can't speak to every situation, we can tell you the bare basics of what to expect on your first visit to our funeral home. When it comes to properly completing death paperwork, and writing a detailed obituary, accuracy is everything.
Grief Support
read moreWhile dealing with grief is not easy, we believe the resources within this section of our website can help. Should you need additional support in grieving your loss, please call us. We will do everything we can to assist you. No one is prepared for grief. The rush of feelings, the thoughts, anxieties, and heartache can take us by surprise and drive us to our knees. Yet, when we choose to harness that power for self-growth, amazing things can happen. Good can come from pain. Sigmund Freud first brought up the concept of grief work in 1917, and today the idea that bereavement is purpose-driven continues.
Our History
read moreThe Edward F. Adzima Funeral Home opened for business in 1935 on Main Street in Derby. Two years later, Mr. Adzima moved his funeral home to a location on Factory Street, close to St. Michael's Church, where he served many parishioners. A fire in 1944 forced him to relocate again, which he did to our address on Elizabeth Street. Originally the home of R.W. Blake, President of the Sterling Piano Factory of Ansonia in 1880-81, the first floor of the beautiful Victorian home served the public as a funeral home while Mr. Adzima raised his family on the second floor.
