After serving as a graduate assistant at Eastern Michigan University from 1967-1968, Ron joined the U.S. Marine Corps where he earned two purple hearts for his service in the Vietnam War. Upon his return, he served as Head Cross Country Coach at the University of Michigan for the next 36 years. During his time at UM, he coached more than 85 college athletes to national honors.
