This disease damages the optic nerve, the main nerve of the eye, and is usually a result of poor drainage of normal eye fluid, creating increased eye pressure on the optic nerve. The pressure forces the optic nerve into a different shape, thereby damaging the nerve over time. As the nerve is forced into a different shape, the vision will gradually decrease, eventually resulting in loss of vision. Peripheral vision (vision to the sides) is the first to be affected, following with central vision (vision straight ahead).

When the eyes are not receiving enough moisture from your tears, a patient may suffer from dry eyes. Dry Eye Syndrome is a lack of lubrication and moisture in the eye. This could be caused by decreased tear production or increased evaporation. Common symptoms include burning, itching, stinging or tired eyes, blurred vision, sensitivity to light, redness of the eyes, and even tearing watery eyes.

This procedure might be suggested for patients with cataracts or as a form of vision correction. Originally, IOLs were only able to provide distance vision, thereby requiring the patient to use reading glasses. Recent technology introduced the "Premium IOLs". Premium IOL's (Multifocal or Accommodative) refer to implants that may be able to provide both distance and decent near vision.
