read moreAmong the many troubling images from the U.S. Capitol building last week were images of "Jesus 2020" flags. I began to wonder, what makes them think that Jesus would encourage an insurrection on the capitol building? I, for one, did not see Jesus leading the charge toward the capitol building. The witness to Jesus that started with John the Baptist continues in our Gospel passage for today. Jesus continues to go about the business of gathering his team of disciples one by one. What happens next is an important component of this story because as soon as Jesus invites Philip to 'follow him' he is immediately filled with the need to evangelize, to spread the Good News.
About Us
read moreIn 1953 The Episcopal Church of the Ascension was chartered as a "Self-Organized" Mission Station, meeting in the Vestavia Hills Town Hall, in homes, and in kindergarten and school buildings, under the guidance of Bishops Carpenter and Murray; The Reverends John Turn, Marshall Seifert, Benjamin Smith; our first Vicars, The Reverends David Cady Wright, and Lee Graham; and Lay Reader, Judge Eugene Hawkins. In 1956, we became an Organized Mission with The Reverend Josiah W. Ware, Jr. as first full-time Vicar.
