read moreMost of my publications are available on request. The first volume of a giant handbook on language contact for Mouton de Gruyter is now out, edited by Jeroen Darquennes, Wim Vandenbussche and me and we're starting work on the second. My book on Sound Change is now in production with Edinburgh University Press. The second edition of A History of German: What the past reveals about today's language appeared in 2018 with Oxford University Press. Tom Purnell, Eric Raimy and I are working on Modularity in Phonology, a short book for Cambridge.

read moreMy research is basically all collaboration with students and colleagues, aiming to advance our understanding of speech sounds, how they work as systems, how they are produced and perceived, how they are situated in society and how they change over time. This includes the Wisconsin Languages Project with (Tom Purnell and Eric Raimy). Our work integrates research, teaching and outreach. I also try to understand language contact and language shift, including heritage languages. I work occasionally on morphology, and other issues.
