And on January 1, 1999, Family and Child Services officially changed its name to Gateway. The name Gateway, just like Family and Child Services, doesn't represent one program, but encompasses a whole host of programs designed to assist families and kids in crisis. We've gone by some different names over the past 100 years. But regardless of what we call ourselves, our aim has always been the same: helping families and kids rebuild their lives and plan for promising futures. And that is exactly what we plan to keep doing for many years to come.

read moreIn 1891 and before they had the right to vote, a group of courageous women recognized the need to house homeless children and mothers on the streets of Birmingham. Significantly ahead of their times, they founded the city's first orphanage and the beginnings of child and family services in Alabama. For the next 129 years, Gateway continued our founders' legacy of innovation and impact, rising to the challenges of the times and pioneering solutions for Alabama children and families. Though a lot has changed since 1891, the why behind what we do remains the same.
