Historic Jayhawk Theater
Theaters & Cinemas in Topeka, KS
When the Jayhawk Theatre threw open its doors in 1926, local flappers possibly called it the bees knees! Seating 1500 and featuring gold-leaf paint, special lighting features, a magnificent theatre organ, wonderful art and sumptuous curtains and seats, the Jayhawk truly was a state-of-the-art entertainment palace. It provided the latest movies and big vaudeville stars who loved to play Topeka in the summer because of the Jayhawk's air-conditioning. The Jayhawk's safety-conscious design made it a prototype followed by 100's of later theatres throughout the country.
