Much of the American nonprofit theatre is struggling financially. In the most recent TCG Theatre Facts survey, the 105 theatres that participated in the survey in each of the last five years reported unhealthy financial conditions despite the participants including several of the biggest and most prestigious theatres in the US. Fifty-five percent of this group incurred an operating loss in the year 2008. Thirty-six of the 105 theatres reported an operating loss greater than 10% of total budget.
