New College-Adv Christian Stdy
College in Berkeley, CA
New College Berkeley was established in 1977 by a group of Bay Area lay Christians, pastors, and scholars dedicated to delivering high-calibre interdisciplinary studies for the laity. The organization is led by an executive staff, a Board of Trustees and an Advisory Board. The Executive Director is Susan S. Phillips, Ph. D. And the Associate Director is Sharon Gallagher, M. T. S. Many Christians want to build a stronger relationship between Sunday morning worship and their Monday morning responsibilities.

New College Berkeley carries out its mission and ministry amid the intellectual, cultural, political, and ethnic diversity of the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. The truths of biblical Christianity are best learned and lived in open encounter with other points of view and styles of life. Our faculty and students seek to learn to be "in the world, but not of it."

Since its founding in 1977, New College Berkeley has served undergraduates, graduate students, and life-time learners with wide-ranging courses, conferences, seminars, lectures, and retreats aimed at renewing minds, deepening faith, and shaping vocation. We do so at in-person gatherings and, especially in a season of public health concerns, we also do so through on-line gatherings.

Sometimes it is a matter of personal discipleship: a person with a chronic illness attends a course about where God is when we suffer, or a person whose brother is involved with New Age spirituality attends a lecture that is a Christian theologian's response to the New Age. Because of the proximity of New College Berkeley to the University of California, undergraduate and graduate students frequently attend our programs as they look for Christian teaching that can engage the secular arguments they encounter in their classrooms and reading.

NCB's founders, a group of lay Christians, pastors, and scholars, established New College Berkeley to provide our students, both Christian and those interested in Christianity with a place to study and talk about how contemporary Christians engage contemporary issues. NCB's founders were committed to providing high-caliber interdisciplinary studies for the laity. They believed that all Christians, not only professional clergy, have a ministry.
